25 Years of Film Edinburgh

Scotland’s oldest film office, Film Edinburgh celebrates 25 years as a regional film office this month. Film Edinburgh is the first port of call for filmmakers on the hunt for locations, responding to filmmaker enquiries from all over the world with images of and information about locations in Edinburgh, Lothians and the Scottish Borders.
Let’s take a look at some of the filming highlights over the last 25 years:
Cloud Atlas (2012) - Starring Tom Hanks and Halle Berry
The star-studded, sci-fi epic filmed on the South St David's Street, Scott Monument, and Calton Road as well as the City Chambers on the Royal Mile, and in the India Buildings on Victoria Street.
Case Histories (2011/2013) - Starring Jason Isaacs
A popular BBC drama series featuring 'Harry Potter' actor Jason Isaacs which used many locations in Edinburgh including India Buildings, Calton Mews, Waverley Court and St Giles Street.
Filth (2013) - Starring James McAvoy
This dark and often surreal adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel filmed in the Grassmarket and Edinburgh Castle.
Gideon's Daughter (2005) - Starring Bill Nighy and Emily Blunt
BBC's emotional feature length drama filmed on Royal Terrace Calton Hill, Traverse Theatre, Bannerman's Bar and various closes in the Old Town.
The Illusionist (2010)
French-Scottish animated comedy-drama directed by Sylvain Chomet beautifully recreated several Edinburgh locations, including George Street, Broughton Place, Princes Street and Arthurs Seat and the Salisbury Crags.
Jude (1996) - Starring Kate Winslet and Christopher Eccleston
A heartwrenching love story directed by Michael Winterbottom which filmed at the Central Bar Leith, Parliament Square on the Royal Mile and Greyfriars Kirkyard.
Looking After Jo Jo (1998) - Starring Robert Carlyle
This gritty TV mini series set on an Edinburgh council estate in the 1980s was filmed at Sighthill and Niddry, Edinburgh Bus Station, New Parliament House, Greyfriars Kirkyard and Fishmarket Close amongst many others.
One Day (2011) - Starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess
'One Day' is a heartbreaking, modern love story which featured Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. It features many Edinburgh locations, including Arthurs Seat, Warriston Close, Moray Place/Forres St and many more.
Outlander (2014-) - Starring Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan
Starz smash-hit TV epic, based on the historical time-travel series of novels by Diana Gabaldon, filmed at Preston Mill in East Lothian amongst other locations in the Lothians.
The Railway Man (2013) - Starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman
A shockingly dramatic film, based on the book of the same name, features the beach, Gilmerton House and Cockenzie House in North Berwick and also filmed on Calton Hill in Edinburgh which is featured in the film's poster.
Sunshine on Leith (2013) - Starring Peter Mullan and Jane Horrocks
Feel good musical film based from on the stage play which features music of The Proclaimers. The film used many iconic locations in Edinburgh, incuding Calton Hill, The Mound, North Bridge, Constitution Street and the Shore.
Trainspotting (1996) - Starring Ewan McGregor and Ewen Bremner
This cult classic features arguably one of the most famous Edinburgh film scenes - Renton (Ewan McGregor) tearing down Princes Street as he tries to out run store security. It also features Calton Road when Renton narrowly avoids being run over later in the opening scene.
