Family Days out in Edinburgh – Whatever the Weather

During the school holidays make sure you have plenty of family fun ideas that you can enjoy no matter what the Great British weather throws at you!  The majority of us usually have our fingers crossed for dry, sun shiny days, but with so much to do in Edinburgh on those gloomier days too, you might well find yourself torn when the weather forecast comes on!

Things to do in Edinburgh on sunny days

Take the opportunity to enjoy Edinburgh’s beautiful outdoors which are even more stunning on crisp autumn days.  Stroll through the shops, stop off for an al fresco hot chocolate at one of its many quaint cafes and enjoy one of the cities many outdoor attractions.

Get the kids ready for Halloween with an award-winning Cadies & Witchery Tour.  The walking tours, which cater for all ages, are led by costumed guides who offer a light hearted spin on Edinburgh’s ghostly past.

Spend the day discovering the world’s most fascinating creatures at Edinburgh Zoo.  The zoo is home to animals big and small from creepy crawlies to the adorable Giant Pandas.  Visit Europe’s largest outdoor penguin pool, the UK’s only koalas and the stunning 82 acre Edinburgh Zoo gardens.

Travel just 5 miles out to Dalkieth Country Park and enjoy a day strolling, cycling and horse riding through the oaks.  Get close to nature and discover the park’s varied wildlife from Roe deer to buzzards and badgers.

Don’t let the wet weather put you off this season.  Take advantage of the rain and delve into Edinburgh’s rich past at one of its many mesmerizing museums and historic buildings.

Step back in time with a trip to one of Edinburgh’s oldest building: Edinburgh Castle. Explore the fascinating structure at your own pace, or take one of the informative guided tours.  Kids can take part in the castle quiz, and there are various exciting events to look out for throughout the year.

Within the castle grounds, discover wartime Britain at the National War Museum.  Scotland’s victories and defeats are recounted through military collections and personal accounts.  See official military uniforms, medals, equipment, weapons and more.

Adults can enjoy a trip down memory lane as children discover a range of bygone games and toys of the past at the Museum of Childhood.  With interactive exhibitions including a puppet theatre and dress up area, a trip to the museum is one to be enjoyed by all the family.
