Festive Theatre in Edinburgh this Christmas

Over the festive season, a trip to the theatre is a must. This Christmas, there are plenty of magical shows for the whole family in Edinburgh. Take a look at our pick of some of the wonderful productions you have to choose from.

The Nutcracker at Festival Theatre, 13th December to 3rd January

A real Christmas classic, 'The Nutcracker' is the magical tale of young dreamer Clara, a dashing Nutcracker Prince, a formidable army of giant mince pies and the lovely Sugar Plum Fairy. This much loved tale has been entertaining audiences for over 40 years but the stunning 2014 production by the Scottish Ballet will enchant a whole new generation of audiences with some sparkling new elements whilst staying true to the traditional story.

Aladdin at King's Theatre, 29th November to 18th January

“Oh yes it is!” It wouldn't be Christmas without a Panto and the King's Theatre's colourful production of 'Aladdin' certainly ticks all the right boxes. You'll be “booing” and “hissing” a plenty at villain Abanazar played by Forth One's Grant Stott and doubled over in stitches by the ultimate Panto Dame, Allan Stewart. It's a show that's full of festive fun for the whole family.

Wicked at Edinburgh Playhouse, 19th November to 10th January

The worldwide hit musical has finally flown into Edinburgh. Local lass Ashleigh Gray takes on the lead role of Elphaba in her home city. The show follows Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, as she struggles with being green and her friendship with future Good Witch, the pretty, blonde Glinda. Whether you're seeing it for the first time or the fifth, you are bound to fall under the spell of 'Wicked', with hit songs 'Defying Gravity' and 'For Good' filling your head for long after you've seen it.

The BFG at The Lyceum Theatre, 28th November to 3rd January

Roald Dahl's timeless tale is brought to life in this incredible production by The Lyceum Theatre. You will fall in love with the story of Sophie and her friend the Big Friendly Giant all over again and be mesmerised as the characters from your imagination come alive before your eyes. This is a show that should not be missed.

Dick Whittington at Church Hill Theatre, 18th to 28th December

Talented amateur drama group, Edinburgh People's Theatre, presents a charming production of Panto classic 'Dick Whittington'. Go on a journey with the hopeful Dick who travels to London to find out if the streets are really paved with gold. On the way he befriends Tom the cat who accompanies him in his adventures in London and beyond. Full of music, laughter and warmth, this traditional production will entertain both young and old.
