Our Favourite Activities for a Great Girls Day Out in Edinburgh
07 March 2014
Planning a girls’ day out in Edinburgh? Pampering, shopping and a good old natter are top of our list when catching up with friends. We have put together our hot picks of what to do and see in the capital for a fun day out with the girls.
What self-respecting ladies day out would be complete without a good shopping session? Luxury brands, high street stores and beautiful boutiques, shopping in Edinburgh is a fantastic experience catering to all tastes, styles and budgets. Whether you choose to explore eclectic mix of designer fashion boutiques, organic food retailers, gift shops, flower and interior shops of The West End Village or rummage through the vintage delights and independent designers of the Grassmarket or perhaps you fancy a bit of a splurge and go nuts at Multrees Walk, the definition of luxury shopping in Edinburgh and home of Scotland’s only Harvey Nichols, Louis Vuitton and Nespresso. Edinburgh makes one promise – you won’t leave empty- handed.
Fancy a bit of tea and a giggle? What better excuse for a spot of afternoon tea than a ladies day out? Sip the finest loose leaf tea in sophisticated and elegant ambience welcomes you for afternoon tea in Peacock Alley at the Caledonian Waldorf Astoria or take a jaunt to The Shore and indulge in some of the tastiest (and prettiest) cakes in town at Mimi’s Bakehouse or perhaps it’s a special occasion why not add a bit of fizz to your afternoon and enjoy a glass or two of Bollinger in the exquisite surrounds of the Palm Court at The Balmoral?
A Day at the Spa
When it all gets too much, why not escape the pressures of everyday life and take yourself and your girlfriends off for a spa day? How about the haven that is One Spa at the Sheraton Hotel and experience the 19 metre infinity-edge swimming pool that sits high above the Edinburgh skyline? Or get involved in a ‘Hard Day’s Night’ treatment at Lush Spa on Princes Street and bop along to the sounds of The Beatles as you’re pampered? However you and your friends choose to relax, do it Edinburgh.
Breakfast is easily missed, mornings are overrated. Brunch is a much better way to get your ladies days off to a fabulous start. Get involved in some very special eggs such as Eggs Irvine Welsh – scrambled duck eggs with smoked chipotle pepper, sour cream and chives at The Lioness of Leith or go all out and indulge in the very special French Market Table as part of the Sunday Brunch offering at the stunning Hotel Du Vin, coupled with a few expertly made cocktails, a perfect way to catch up with your lady pals. For ladies who brunch, Edinburgh promises to please.
Have your Nails Done
What better excuse to put your feet up and have a bit of a natter with the girls whilst having your nails done than a ladies day out? How about a fabulous treatment using technology from leading nail experts CND from The Wax Bar on Frederick Street? Or combine shopping AND a nail treatment, book a manicure at the nail bar at Harvey Nichols and sip a glass of fizz as you take in the atmosphere as shoppers squirt, dab and sniff the fantastic range of perfumes and beauty products on the ground floor. The ladies of Edinburgh take their beauty treatments very seriously, so the nail bars of Edinburgh are well equipped to meet such high expectations.
Explore the Charity Shops of Stockbridge
Shopping in Edinburgh doesn’t need to break the bank. How about an afternoon discovering what many consider to be some of the best charity shops in the country in the beautifully quaint Stockbridge? Search out that vintage bargain at Mary’s Living and Giving Shop, one of 4 exclusive charity shops opened by Mary Portas or pick up that very special dress Scotland’s first charity bridal shop at The Red Cross Store. Or maybe it’s vinyl you ladies are after? Pay a visit to Oxfam Music, the only one in Edinburgh solely dedicated to the sale of CDs, vinyls and tapes! Shopping. Sorted.
Have a Cocktail or Two…
No matter which side of the city you're on, you'll be able to get your hands on a top class cocktail, here are a couple we have been enjoying recently. Just a short walk West of Grassmarket lies Dragonfly - a 'Best Scottish Interior Design' award winning bar. Under the imposing George VI Bridge then Under the Stairs is next on our list. With their name, one can imagine a dark gloomy bar in some underground shack, but this Under the Stairs is anything but murky. Fashionistas should try the trendy Hotel G&V to enjoy a few drinks at their modishly decorated bar. Finally in the new town, who could forget the super flash TigerLily? 'An Edinburgh bar like no other' is what they say about themselves. Take a seat at one of their poseur tables or purple velvet sofas and you will be surrounded with mirrors, chandeliers and swanky furnishing and elegant décor
