Festival of Museums 2017 is bringing its biggest ever programme of events over the weekend of Friday 19th to Sunday 21st May.

Many of the events are free of charge and are located at various venues around the city. So, whether you're into gory history, fascinating art or curious anatomy, you're bound to find something on offer that will delight and intrigue all the family.

Here are just a selection of some of the events happening over the weekend:

Burke: Now and Then

Join author Janet Philip as she discusses her new book, Burke: Now and Then. Written from the point of view of William Burke’s skeleton, hanging just a couple of floors above, the book investigates the motivations behind the duo’s notorious killing spree and reveals a number of previously unknown facts.

An Evening with Dark Edinburgh

Join us for a talk on how to create stunning images in Edinburgh given by the man behind Dark Edinburgh photography. The talk will be followed by the chance for a small group to attend a short practical workshop and tour of Edinburgh’s top architectural photography spots (weather dependent). The evening will be rounded off in an Edinburgh pub.

Illusion of Life

Create ‘old school’ animated sequences inspired by the magnificent Edinburgh Alphabet exhibition in animated sessions for the whole family. From 2D hand-drawn sequences you will create a flipbook and construct a 19th century-inspired optical viewing device called a ‘Praxinoscope’ to give our drawings the ‘illusion of life’. (Please note: modern technology will be used sparingly!).

Pub Quiz Night

Come along for a very special evening - the festival's very first pub quiz in the City Art Centre! Test your knowledge of the City’s history with a complementary glass of wine, beer or Prosecco given as part of the ticket - though you’re also welcome to BYOB too.

Creel o' Stories

Storyteller Jan Bee Brown will be bringing her Creel o’ Stories to the galleries, specialising in stories about the places where we live and love, linking history, museum objects and local tales.

The willow creel carries feisty fables of Edinburgh’s fishwives and Jan will be asking the public to fish for stories.  For each of the individual letters that make up EDINBURGH there will be an object, a story or a song attached.

The Edinburgh Street Ceilidh

The Jacobites are a professional ceilidh band based in Edinburgh that have performed at weddings and events across Scotland, the UK and Europe. They are also the founders of The Edinburgh Street Ceilidh, a free street event held usually on the Royal Mile.

The Jacobites will perform the Edinburgh Street Ceilidh for the first time in the City Art Centre. They will be teaching and calling all the well-known ceilidh dances to members of the public for free. So come along and ceilidh dance to our traditional music, a fun and uplifting start to our exhibition.
