Never one to rest on its laurels, Edinburgh is constantly evolving and in 2022 you can expect to see new places to wine & dine, new hotels to rest in after a busy day sightseeing and new events to inspire, amaze and enthral you.

So, as we welcome 2022, let’s explore some of the new things coming to Edinburgh and start planning what to do first!


You want somewhere comfortable to lay your head after a day’s sightseeing and shopping in Edinburgh, and the good news there’s a variety of places to choose from. In 2022 many old buildings are taking on a new lease of life as they open their doors as deluxe hotels – why not book now and be one of their first guests!

1. Gleneagles Townhouse

For the first time in its 96-year history, iconic sporting & country estate, Gleneagles, is expanding its brand beyond the Perthshire hills to open a vibrant new townhouse hotel in Edinburgh. Gleneagles Townhouse will be opening in spring 2022 and will be home to a 33-bedroom hotel, an all-day restaurant, lively member’s club and rooftop bar.

Located in one of the city’s most historic buildings on St Andrew Square (previously home to the British Linen Bank which later became the Bank of Scotland), guests can expect timeless charm mixed with all of today’s necessities. Original fireplaces and panelling have been reimagined with fresh colours whilst maintaining their authentic features and modern artworks by local Scottish artists complements antique lighting, ornate cornicing, stone columns, ornamental gold details, original vaults and floor tiles.

In the centre of the old banking hall, all-day restaurant, The Spence will feature a locally-sourced menu, serving breakfast, lunch and three-course dinner; while roof terrace bar, Lamplighters will be serving up a seasonally rotating, locally inspired list of cocktails, local whiskies, beers, spirits, and wine.


2. The W Edinburgh Hotel

With stylish guestrooms, stunning suites and an Extreme Wow Suite (the W brand’s interpretation of the Presidential Suite), The W Edinburgh Hotel is due to open in winter 2022.

Situated in the heart of St James Quarter, which opened in the summer of 2021, this 12-storey hotel will offer a vibrant environment for both guests and locals.

The hotel’s rooftop spaces will also feature a lively destination bar, chef’s table and outdoor terrace, offering guests stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the city’s skyline.

And for guests that really want to switch off, AWAY® Spa will offer W Edinburgh’s signature health and lifestyle experiences. Guests will also be treated to the brand’s iconic Whatever/Whenever® service philosophy that promises whatever they want, whenever they want it!


3, Virgin Hotel Edinburgh

The first Virgin Hotel in the UK and across Europe opens its doors in Edinburgh in spring 2022.

Housed within India Buildings, a mid 19th century building on the city’s popular Victoria Street, the hotel will retain many of the buildings original features, as well as featuring some stunning new designs.

The hotel will have 222 Chambers and several dining and drinking outlets, including the brand’s flagship space, Commons Club.


4. 100 Princes Street Hotel

Its first hotel in Scotland, The Red Carnation Hotel Collection is opening 100 Princes Street in Edinburgh in June 2022.

Paying homage to the buildings rich history (in the 19th century it was Dejay’s Hotel, then later Windsor Hotel, before becoming The Royal Over-Seas League in 1929), the building will have original features alongside modern touches, including a central staircase with hand-painted mural inspired by the adventures of several great Scottish explorers.

This small but perfectly formed hotel will have 30 guest rooms & suites and will focus on service with an "anything, anytime" approach.

5. Duck & Waffle

They already have restaurants in London and Hong Kong, and in 2022 Duck & Waffle are due to open in Edinburgh, their first UK restaurant outside of London.

Located on level 4 of St James Quarter, with a terrace overlooking the entrance, Duck & Waffle are known for their inspired take on traditional British cuisine with broad European influences emphasizing local, rustic, seasonal and sustainable ingredients. With dishes that are designed for sampling and sharing, it’s the perfect place for catching up with family and friends.

Celebrating the culture and cuisine of Japan, Brazil and Peru, fusion restaurant SUSHISAMBA will open its doors in St James Quarter in 2022.

Occupying the rooftop levels of the centre’s W Edinburgh Hotel, the chain also has restaurants in London, Las Vegas and Dubai.



Muirfield Golf Course

Scotland is widely known as The Home of Golf (the first recorded rules of the game were created by the golfers playing at Edinburgh’s Leith Links in 1744), so it’s no surprise that some of the world’s greatest golfing tournaments take place here.


7. AIG Women's Open

One of the sport's most successful Major Championships, and possibly the biggest event in women's golf, The AIG Women's Open is being staged at the iconic Muirfield Golf Club in East Lothian in August 2022.

Stunning images of this historic golf course, 20 miles from Edinburgh, will be beamed to a global audience as golf fans get the chance to watch the world's best female golfers compete for this highly sought-after major title.

Comedy, ballet, drama, musicals – for a small city, Edinburgh certainly punches above its weight when it comes to staging spectacular shows.

8. Disney's The Lion King

Be transported to the majesty of the Serengeti Plains as Disney's The Lion King comes to town in June 2022.

Based on the smash hit 1994 Disney animated film of the same name, Edinburgh is the only Scottish stop on the UK tour, so be sure to book your tickets now.


9. RSNO Spring22 John Williams at the Movies

Star Wars, Superman, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan – the movie scores of John Williams are unique.

Hear these much-loved scores and more at this very special performance by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra at the Usher Hall for one night only in February 2022.


10. Everybody's Talking About Jamie

After receiving critical acclaim from the West End show, Everybody's Talking About Jamie comes to Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre in March.

Funny, fabulous and feelgood, this brand-new musical will have everybody talking about Jamie for years to come.


11. The Da Vinci Code

Chances are, you’ve read the book and seen the film – you may have even been to Rosslyn Chapel - now come and see the best-selling novel of this century as a stage show at the King’s Theatre.

With Nigel Harman (EastEnders, Hotel Babylon) as Professor Robert Langdon and Danny JohnJules (Red Dwarf, Death in Paradise) as Sir Leigh Teabing, The Da Vinci Code comes to Edinburgh in April 2022.
