CR Smith's Sleep in the Park team visits new village for the homeless
16 July 2018
Following the successful launch of the Social Bite Village in May, many of the local volunteers and businesses who have supported the charity that aims to eradicate homelessness have visited the site, which their fundraising efforts helped to build.
Among them was a team from Edinburgh Tram sponsors, CR Smith. The home improvement company is one of many organisations that has worked closely with Social Bite to make the village of 11 NestHouses and community centre a reality.
CR Smith donated all the double glazed windows and doors for the new homes, which welcomed their first residents in June. Their head office staff also got behind the cause and put their efforts into a tremendous fundraising campaign.
Colleagues Marion Gilles, Cath Herdman, Mariola Szczesna, Lynn Richmond and Joanna MacLaine donned several layers and braced temperatures of minus four to sleep out under the stars alongside 8,000 others in Edinburgh’s Prince’s Street Gardens last December as part of Social Bite’s Sleep in the Park.
Experiencing frost on their sleeping bags, it really hit home that many people face this daily hardship and spurred on their fundraising which included raffles, a concert in the firm’s staff ‘bistro’, a ladies night and cake sales.
Their boss, Gerard Eadie CBE, was full of praise for their efforts and even provided the team with bivvy bags to help them fend off the elements on the night. In the end, the team handed over £5,200 to the charity.
He said: “The team put in a lot of hard work and should be very proud of what they achieved. They succeeded in getting everyone within the firm talking about what they were doing and why they were doing it.
He joined the team on the tour of the new village. “Looking around the village it is very impressive. The NestHouses look good, they are energy-efficient, and eco-friendly and the village offers homeless people somewhere safe and secure to live and receive support to get their life back on track. It wasn’t hard to get everyone behind the decision to support Social Bite and I’m proud of what we and our team have contributed.”
Inviting the CR Smith team to tour the village Josh Littlejohn MBE added: "CR Smith have been one of our key partners at the Social Bite Village. Without the level of corporate support that has been displayed, the Village would never have become a reality.
“CR Smith has shown that there is real motivation for businesses to become part of the movement to end homelessness in Scotland, and I would like to extend my personal thanks to everyone at CR Smith for their support."
CR Smith is a privately-owned business and Scotland’s leading replacement windows, doors and conservatories business, employing nearly 400 across manufacturing, installation, sales and customer service. It became the city’s first major sponsor of the Edinburgh Trams in August last year, wrapping 18 trams in a vibrant and highly visual campaign promoting a ‘window to Scotland’ and the breadth of its customer base across Scotland.
