The perfect rainy day in Edinburgh
17 October 2016
- things to do
Let's face it, sometimes the weather in Edinburgh leaves a lot to be desired! Be sure to pack your raincoat and welly boots, as the city has been known to fall victim to the odd downpour or two.
Never fear though - there are a few things to do when the weather isn't playing in Edinburgh which, though as appealing as it sounds, doesn't involve staying in under a duvet with a hot cuppa.
Wander around the Museums
When the weather takes a soggy turn, many locals seek shade in the grand, beautiful and occasionally quirky museums. You can easily lose a day exploring the warren of galleries at the National Museum of Scotland, which has wonders from the world of technology, fashion, nature, culture and much more.
In addition the usual cuplrits, did you know that Edinburgh has museums for firefighting, geology, money and famous authors, not to mention the world's first Museum of Childhood? No matter what floats your boat, you'll find a fascinating museum that will offer a bit of shelter - and you might even learn something too!
Indulge in some retail therapy
Nothing brightens up a dull day than a little bit of retail therapy - so grab that brolly and check out some of our unique independent shops in little nooks and crannies like Thistle Street, the West End and the Grassmarket.
Not brave enough to face the wet? Get lost in Edinburgh's large shopping centres, like Waverley Mall, Ocean Terminal or Edinburgh's 178-year old shopping grand dame Jenners and buy some much needed rain gear.
Leave Netflix at home
Buy some popcorn and catch a movie in the comfort of the cinema. Edinburgh has a brilliant range of cinemas, from the large crowd-pleasing multiplexes at the Omni and Ocean Terminal, to the quirky and comfortable Cameo in Bruntsfield and the famous auditoriums filled with leather sofas at the Dominion.
Plus - don't forget local university film societies which host regular events and screenings.
Get in some 'me-time'
Relax, unwind or just treat yourself at a spa and you'll be spoiled for choice in Edinburgh. From bio-saunas to hammams, to aroma grottos to Ayurvedic treatments.
We love the One Spa at the Sheraton Grand Hotel, which has a warming thermal suite that offers a range of thermal treatments, as well as a breath-taking rooftop pool - perfect for hopping into if the clouds clear.
Hide in an Escape-Room
Take your mind off the bad weather outside by getting locked in one of Edinburgh's thrilling escape rooms. To be honest, it's pretty hard to focus on the rain when you're trying to repair a space station against the clock before being obliterated by meteorites!
With fun real-life puzzles to solve and a range of activities to choose from, what a better way to spend the day when it's pouring outside?
If you're really desperate for shelter from the rain, then you can alway seek cover with our ghostly inhabitants of Edinburgh's underground...
Buried deep under South Bridge is a warren of vaults that certainly offer shelter from the rain, but the chilling tales hidden within these darks and damp cellars are unlikely to offer any warmth or comfort. Still, when you have heard about the eerie stories of Edinburgh's underground, rain will be the last thing on your mind...
