Every July, The Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival brings some of the world's very best jazz and blues acts to Edinburgh.
The Edinburgh Jazz and Blues festival was founded in 1978 by banjo player and guitarist Mike Hart, initially focussing on traditional jazz with gigs mainly in pubs. Since then it has expanded and grown to represent a wide range of styles within this vibrant musical genre, from bop to boogie-woogie to blues-rock; from samba to swing to soul.
With over 36,000 ticket sales and 67,000 attendees, it is now one of the top 10 jazz festivals in Europe.
Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival 2019 Highlights
The 42nd edition offers over 130 concerts over ten days in 12 venues. In addition to offering a brilliant snapshot of where jazz and blues are in Scotland; Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival take a perspective on where we are in the world, with a host of international collaborations, and performers from South and North America; Africa; all over Europe; Asia and Australasia.
Among the many highlights are John Bruce, Irini Arabatzi, Stewart Forbes, Melissa Aldana, Gonzalo Bergara and Rumba de Bodas.
One of the Festival’s highlights is the colourful Mardi Gras, which will transform the Grassmarket into a mini New Orleans for the afternoon on Saturday 13 July. This event is free to attend and there will be a whole host of live musicians and bands bringing the party atmosphere and non-stop entertainment.
Edinburgh Festival Carnival
Another festival favourite is the incredible Carnival, which includes over 700 performers from around the world. On Sunday 14 July, get swept up in the party atmosphere as the Carnival parade makes its way down The Mound and onto Princes Street where you can immerse yourself in music, colourful costumes, circus acrobatics and puppetry.
