Iasgar Mor Oil On Board By Donald Smith

Born in rural Lewis in 1926, Donald John Smith’s art always remained uniquely loyal to his roots. Taking his inspiration from everyday life on Lewis, his paintings capture scenes of island fishermn and women going about their daily business. Islander: the paintings of Donald Smith is the first major exhibition of his work and can be seen at the City Art Centre until 26 September 2021.

In celebration of his work and the exhibition, City Art Centre are hosting several online storytelling sessions which further explore the poetic work of Donald Smith, featuring the artist’s nephew, Ian Stephen, himself a writer and storyteller from Lewis.

Ian’s grandfather, Murdo Smith from Shawbost on Lewis, was an orator and custodian of stories and traditions. Ian has been combining the gathering and telling of his grandfather’s stories with his literary work since the late 1970s. He has shared these stories round Scotland and abroad, from Lahore Literary Festival to the Australian Wooden Boat Festival.

This September, join Ian for 3 short storytelling sessions exploring themes suggested by the paintings of Donald Smith:
