Premiering in the UK as part of Edinburgh Art Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe, RAPHAEL Magister Raffaello is an innovative digital installation that explores Raphael’s work in the context of 16th century Italy.

Painter, draughtsman, architect, and tapestry designer, Raphael (1483–1520) was one of the greatest artists of the High Renaissance. During his brief career, spanning just two decades, he shaped the course of European art, sealing his reputation as a Renaissance Master.

Marking the 500th anniversary of his death, this exhibition will allow visitors to travel to Raphael’s birthplace Urbino and explore Florence and Rome in a unique multimedia experience. An audio guide will navigate visitors through large-scale projections and displays, opening with a real-scale reproduction on wood panel of Raphael’s self-portrait, before shifting to key works including The Deposition (1507) and The Madonna of the Goldfinch (1505-07).

While Raphael is admired for his skill as a painter, he was also a talented tapestry designer. In homage to his designs, the Dovecot weavers have created a contemporary tapestry inspired by a section of Raphael’s design from The Miraculous Draught of Fishes (1515-16). The creation of this new tapestry both highlights the significance of Raphael as a tapestry designer and Dovecot Studios as keepers and innovators of weaving tradition.

Celia Joicey, Director of Dovecot Studios says, “This hugely innovative exhibition is an opportunity for Scottish audiences to experience the work of Raphael, one of the world’s greatest artistic geniuses, in a completely new way. Connecting Raphael’s impact on tapestry and the work of internationally renowned tapestry studio Dovecot, our weavers have also been set the unique opportunity to reimagine the work of a Renaissance Master through an exciting 21st century tapestry.”

General Admission is £10.50 per person (includes entry to Alan Davie: Beginning of a Far-off World). Under 12’s are free.
