The first retrospective exhibition dedicated to the Scottish artist John Henry Lorimer (1856-1936) opens at the City Art Centre.

John Henry Lorimer Flight Of The Swallows

Featuring almost 50 oil paintings, watercolours, sketches and objects, this special exhibition will explore Lorimer’s skill and creativity through five themes: light, identity, family, femininity and home.

After studying at Edinburgh University, Lorimer trained at the Royal Scottish Academy, becoming a successful portrait and contemporary genre scenes artist. In 1878 the Lorimer family acquired the lease of Kellie Castle in Fife, and the castle and its grounds became the subject of many of Lorimer’s paintings.

This exhibition, which is free to attend, includes works from public and private collections, the majority of which have not been on public display before.

In conjunction with the exhibition, a special programme of events including tours, in-conversations, talks, lectures, poetry readings, art workshops, musical performance, costumed performance and fashion shows are also planned – see Museums and Galleries Edinburgh’s What’s On page for further updates, information and booking details.
