Winning more than 25 major awards and seen by over 8.3 million people worldwide, War Horse has become the most successful play in the history of the National Theatre.
Set against the backdrop of the First World War, the story centres on a young boy called Albert and his horse Joey. The powerfully moving and imaginative drama is filled with stirring music and songs, featuring ground-breaking puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which brings breathing, galloping, charging, horses to thrilling life on stage.
Part of an 18-month UK tour, this tour of War Horse marks 110 years since the start of the First World War. It also follows the 40th anniversary of the publication of Michael Morpurgo’s global best-selling novel, which has now sold over 35 million copies world-wide and in 37 different languages.

The recommended minimum age for this show is 10 years old. Please note the production contains loud sound effects, flashing lights, and strobe lighting.
A captioned performance takes places on the evening of 09 October. A touch tour, audio described and British sign language performance runs on the afternoon of 11 October.
War Horse is at the Festival Theatre from 02 to 11 October 2025. The theatre is located on Nicolson Street. Several of Lothian Buses routes serve the area on a regular basis.
