Barnton Bunker
Head underground and tour a declassified Cold War nuclear bunker - a unique and deeply atmospheric site with a fascinating history
Hidden under the hills in the outskirts of Edinburgh is a fascinating warren of corridors and chambers designed to survive a nuclear blast. Built in the 1950s, Barnton Bunker was formerly a top-secret military site, the existence of which was only leaked in the 1960s. At one time it was even intended to serve as the command centre if a nuclear war cut off Scotland from the rest of the UK. From the 1990s, it fell into disrepair, but today it's being reborn as a museum showcasing the site's role in World War 2 and the Cold War - and as one of the city's most unique events spaces.
Our weekly tours with expert guides will take you deep into the atmospheric, historical space, to learn about the bunker's story and our work restoring it. These tours provide a fun and informative experience for visitors of all ages.
