Edinburgh Playhouse
LeithThe Edinburgh Playhouse showcases the best of theatre including musicals, gigs, plays, stand up comedy, opera & more.
The Edinburgh Playhouse plays host to some of the world’s biggest musicals and performers.
Although designed as a variety venue, which would also screen films, the huge success of the ‘talkies’ meant that it opened in 1929 as a single screen cinema. It was very successful and remained so until the decline in cinema going forced it to close in 1973.
The building was earmarked for demolition but following several years of ‘save the Playhouse’ campaigns, it was saved and at last opened as a fully functional theatre in June 1980.
Since then it has welcomed the very best entertainment and entertainers from across the world.
Shows scheduled to appear this year include Annie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the Musical, Disney’s Aladdin and Wicked, to name but a few.
Comedy acts include Dave Gorman, Jon Richardson and Daniel Sloss.
New shows are being added all the time, so check the website for the most up to date listings.
The Boards Bar and Pizza Al Teatro Pizzeria are open on performance days from two hours before the performance.
