Craigies Farm Business Spotlight

20 October 2025

Autumn in Edinburgh brings crisp air, golden leaves and a sense of seasonal celebration and Craigie’s Farm is embracing it all. Based in South Queensferry, this family-run farm has become a destination not just for its produce, but for the experiences it creates, inspired by the city and its community.

With Halloween approaching, Craigie’s pumpkin patch and annual Pumpkin Festival are shining examples of how the farm blends city inspiration with rural charm, creating moments that connect people with the season and with each other.

Through George’s insight, discover how Edinburgh continues to shape Craigie’s story and inspires the farm’s commitment to community, celebration and unforgettable experiences.

What inspired you to start a business in Edinburgh?

The inspiration really came from family. My grandad started the farm here in Edinburgh and I grew up surrounded by it. Seeing the hard work and care that went into building it made me want to continue the legacy and keep the family business thriving for future generations.

What makes being based in or near Scotland’s capital so special for your business?

Being based on the outskirts of Scotland’s capital is really special because it gives us the chance to connect with such a wide range of people. Edinburgh attracts visitors from all over the world and that diversity brings a lot of interest to our business. At the same time, we’re able to stay close to our local community and showcase the best of Scottish farming traditions right on the capital’s doorstep.

In what ways has the local community helped support and shape Craigie’s growth over the years?

The local community has played a huge role in shaping Craigie’s’ journey. From the very beginning, their support and encouragement have allowed us to grow and evolve. Listening to their feedback has helped us understand what people really want, whether that’s in the farm shop, café or events we run. Their loyalty and involvement have been a constant reminder that Craigie’s isn’t just a business, it’s part of the community.

How do you incorporate Edinburgh or the wider Scottish identity into your products, branding or visitor experience?

We try to use traditional Scottish elements, like incorporating tartan patterns, Highland cow-themed products etc, as much as possible.  We use local ingredients and highlight the use of Scottish produce, whisky or craftsmanship in products, emphasising their local origin and heritage. We also take pride in using local or our own products as much as possible.

What is your favourite part of living and working in and around Edinburgh?

My favourite part of working in and around Edinburgh is having access to such a rich and vibrant cultural scene, including world-famous events like the Fringe Festival. I also love the iconic Edinburgh Castle, the variety of amazing local food and restaurants and the unique blend of tradition and modernity that makes Edinburgh such a dynamic place to live and work.

What does your ideal 24 hours in Edinburgh look like?

Overall, my perfect day would combine great food, a drink or two at some of Edinburgh’s vibrant pubs, a scenic walk through the city or a nearby park and an evening enjoying lively Fringe Festival entertainment, whether it’s street performers, shows or live music. It’s all about embracing the energetic atmosphere and diverse culture that make Edinburgh such a unique and exciting place to experience beyond its historic sites.

What is one local hidden gem that you swear by and tell all your clients or friends about?

One hidden gem I swear by is Victor Hugo Deli, which was near my flat in the Meadows when I was at uni. Their breakfast baguette is spot-on. I also really like Oink for their hog roast roll – one of the best quick bites around.  And for a good night out, I love Three Sisters and Drop Kick Murphys, both are great pubs.

What’s one local event or tradition in Edinburgh that you never miss and why?

One local event I never miss in Edinburgh is the Edinburgh Farmers’ Market. I love going there because it’s a great chance to browse and support local farmers and producers, and it really highlights the city’s commitment to fresh, sustainable food. Plus, it’s a perfect way to connect with the community and get inspiration for my own business at Craigie’s Farm.

If you could collaborate with any other local business or Edinburgh-based personality, who would it be and what kind of project would you dream up?

I’d love to work with someone like Edinburgh’s local chefs or food producers, especially those passionate about sustainability and farm produce. A dream project would be creating a farm-to-table festival or pop-up event right here at Craigie’s Farm, showcasing the best of Edinburgh’s local produce, with cooking demos, workshops and tastings. Alternatively, collaborating with a well-known Edinburgh personality, like a local chef or food influencer, could help promote the importance of sustainable farming and healthy eating. It would be a great way to celebrate Edinburgh’s vibrant food scene while highlighting our farm’s commitment to local produce.

Looking to the future, how do you see Craigie’s evolving within Edinburgh’s vibrant food, farming and tourism landscape?

Looking to the future, I see Craigie’s really growing as a key part of Edinburgh’s vibrant food, farming, and tourism scene. We want to expand our farm shop and introduce more innovative, sustainable products that highlight local ingredients. More importantly, I’d love to develop unique experiences like farm tours, workshops and farm-to-table events that bring people closer to where their food comes from.  We also see great potential in collaborating with local chefs, markets and tourism providers to showcase Edinburgh’s rich agricultural heritage and promote sustainable farming practices. Ultimately, I want Craigie’s to be a go-to destination where visitors and locals alike can celebrate Edinburgh’s thriving farming culture and enjoy fresh, local produce in a warm and welcoming environment.
