Once part of the city’s most vibrant streets, the perfectly preserved Real Mary King’s Close on Edinburgh historic Royal Mile provides a fascinating glimpse into life in the city between the 17th and 19th centuries.
Known for having been “a haven for independent women” with 45% of properties having a female head of the household, The Close is the perfect place to celebrate International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month and discover more about the achievements of the women who once lived and worked here.
Meet and learn all about Mary King, a fabric merchant who built her own business after her husband’s death and discover how she obtained voting rights nearly 300 years ahead of her time.
The tour will also include fascinating revelations about women who pioneered gender equality, such as Sophia-Jex Blake and the revolutionary Edinburgh Seven who fought for women’s education and the right to practice medicine.
Lasting 1 hour, tours run every Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 01 until 23 March 2024. Tours start at 4pm and 5.30pm. For more information and to book tickets visit A Herstory Tour.
