Mercat Tours are giving visitors the opportunity to delve underground and take a tour of the Blair Street Underground Vaults – the city’s oldest and deepest vaults – and take part in an archaeological workshop. Find out more about these grand feats of engineering from Edinburgh’s Georgian past. Why were the vaults built? Who used them? All your questions will be answered as Mercat’s 5-star storytellers bring the history of the vaults to life.
After the tour guests are invited to Megget’s Cellar – Mercat’s underground suite. Here, there will be the unique opportunity to view and handle objects uncovered during the vault’s excavation. These valuable items give an unrivalled insight into life in the city. Maps, plans, street directories and newspaper articles that record the planning and building of the bridge, as well as public attitudes towards it, will also be on display.
The evening ends with a glass of claret – a drink once stored in the vaults. Soft drinks also available. Evening Of Archives And Artefacts takes place on 23 September 2023 at 4pm. Tickets should be prebooked on Mercat Tours’ website.
