There are more pubs and restaurants in the Grassmarket than you can shake a stick at! So if you're visiting the area, take the time to explore all your options before you pick somewhere to settle in for the night, as we couldn't possibly list them all here.

Those searching for traditional Scottish dishes like haggis, neeps and tatties will not be disappointed. Howies on Victoria Street has an excellent menu boasting the best of traditional Scottish cuisine, while the Grain Store serves local Scottish produce, served in vaulted and alcoved former storeroom.

If it's a great pizza that'll make your night, you're spoilt for choice. Mamma's American Pizza offer, well, American style pizzas in a warm, friendly vibe. On the other hand, o'Oliviero is a traditional Italian ristorante and pizzeria with classically sophisticated interiors and an intimate atmosphere.

El Toro Loco serves unfussy Mexican street food - the tacos are great - with a cosy interior and friendly atmosphere. They also have a choice of Mexican beers and delicious margaritas.

And of course we couldn't miss the classic French delights of Petit Paris. This friendly bistro offers some great set-menu deals, daily specials, and a delicious a la carte menu.

Pubs and Bars

Cold Town House

The Grassmarket is home to a number of traditional pubs with great beer selections, live music, and lively atmospheres. Maggie Dickson's, Biddy Mulligans, The Last DropWhite Hart Inn, the Black Bull and the Fiddlers Arms each have their own connection to the history of the Grassmarket. A fun evening to be had wherever you end up.

If classy cocktails are more your thing, Dragonfly Cocktail Bar is a stylish spot with a range of specials and old favourites. 52 Canoes Tiki Den offers something entirely different, with a range of rum-themed cocktails, and fantastic tiki decor.

Cold Town View Of Castle

For a more modern pub with a great selection of locally brewed craft beers, visit the Cold Town House. A glass of prosecco on the rooftop terrace makes the perfect end to a busy day in town.

Cafes and sweet treats

Maison de Moggy

The Grassmarket Cafe, found at the Grassmarket Community Project, is a great place to grab a coffee or a light lunch with a friend. Their food is great value, and tasty, and as a bonus, it all supports the charitable work of the community project. You can also pay it forward, and donate the cost of a meal for someone in need.

Cat lovers should head to Edinburgh's only cat cafe, Maison de Moggy, where you can enjoy tea, coffee and cake whilst surrounded by furry feline friends.

And now for the desserts! Mary's Milk Bar serve the most incredible milkshakes with all the flavours and toppings you could ever imagine. Or if you prefer your ice cream served straight, visit the former police box at the east end of the Grassmarket where you can usually enjoy a cone or a tub from Over Langshaw Farmhouse ice cream.

If you're very lucky, you'll find the French Connection crepe van, which often hangs out in the Grassmarket. They serve freshly made crepes with all kinds of sweet and savoury toppings, along with hot dogs, burgers and hot and cold drinks.
