About

Edinburgh Waverley Station provides the main train hub for train travellers coming to the Capital from the rest of Scotland and UK.

The station has recently undergone a major refurbishment aiming to create a transport hub appropriate to the needs of today’s travellers providing waiting facilities, shops, cafes and food outlets and direct access to Market Street to the North and Princes Street to the South. The famous Waverley Steps also provide access to the Waverley Market shopping mall with a small supermarket, fast food restaurants and retail stores. The station is in itself a part of the historic centre of the city having been opened in 1849 to accommodate the new developments in steam train travel and still maintains some of its Victorian splendour.

While private cars are no longer able to enter the station, parking is available at the nearby New Street Car Park where the first 40 minutes are free. Pedestrian entrances are all step-free at Princes Street, Market Street, Calton Road (via lift) and Waverley Bridge (via ramp). A taxi rank is situated on Market Street.

The station provides toilet and baby changing facilities and non-wheelchair showers are available for £5. ATMs are available in the station and there are payphones and text phones on the main concourse. The station has a lost luggage office which is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm and left luggage can be booked into the office on Platform 2 – open Monday to Sunday, 8am to 9pm. Enterprise Car Hire have an office and pick up/drop off point on the second floor of New Street Car Park which is accessible by the Market Street lift down to the car park.

Lifts connect the concourse to the footbridge and platforms 1, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 20. The ticket offices have induction loops installed and for the visually impaired tactile warning strips are in place along platform edges except for platforms 4, 7, 8 and 9. Several members of staff are Level 1 Guide Communicators. Those needing assistance should call 0845 722 5225 in advance or by contacting your train operator directly. Wheelchairs are available via the Assistance Team as is a mobility vehicle. The full Accessible Travel Policy is available online.
