Founded in 1688, John’s Coffee House and Tavern was a lively hub of intellectual discussion and social debate. It is said that some of the most influential ideas of the Enlightenment were born here, with a coffee or ale in hand.

Reopened in March 2025, the historic details of this coffee house have been refurbished, offering today’s guests a warm and inviting space to enjoy everything from breakfast in the morning to drinks later at night, staying true to Edinburgh’s 17th century coffee house and taverns. So whether it’s a working lunch, meet-up with friends, or a family catch-up, it’s the perfect spot for experiencing Edinburgh’s history while enjoying the best of Scotland’s culinary offerings.

Valid Monday to Friday until 18 December, residents with an EH postcode can enjoy 20% discount on the dinner menu (5pm to 9pm),at John’s Coffee House & Tavern.
