Nelson Monument – Resident preview

Standing at the highest point of Calton Hill is the striking Nelson Monument. This upturned telescope is one of the most impressive elements along Edinburgh’s skyline and its rich history stretches back over 200 years.

The monument was designed by the architect Robert Burn and was built between 1807 and 1815. In 1853 a time ball was added to the top of the tower and acted as a time signal to ships in the Firth of Forth.

While offering incredible views from the exterior elevated platform, inside visitors will be able to discover the fascinating story of this majestic tower. The current exhibition explores the life of Charles Piazzi Smyth, originator of the one o’clock gun and time ball, and whose pioneering work at Calton Hill during the 19th century changed the practice of astronomy across the world.

Exclusively for residents with an EH postcode, we are offering 10 pairs of tickets to visit the Nelson Monument. Visits should be booked and taken by the end of September 2024.
