Come join us at The Edinburgh Remakery for a series of special craft workshops celebrating 900 years of Edinburgh! There are four free workshops taking place, which will promote Edinburgh’s rich literary heritage by celebrating iconic writers such as Robert Burns, whose legacy is closely tied to the city. By combining literature with creative, sustainable crafting, the workshops bring historic texts to life in a hands-on, accessible way that reflects both Edinburgh’s storytelling traditions and its artisan roots.
6th August
Dive into the rich history of this beautiful city while creating your very own ‘Red, Red, Rose’ out of recycled paper. The sesson will begin with a story written by a local writer, based around the work of Robert Burns. Then you’ll have a chance to let your creativity flow, creating your very own ‘Red, Red, Rose’ with the help of a local artist. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to connect with the city’s past through art and craft!
7th August
Join us for a creative and calming workshop based around the work of Arthur Conan Doyle where we’ll explore the art of Zentangle—a relaxing and accessible drawing method using repetitive patterns, shapes, and marks. We’ll begin by taking inspiration from Sherlock Holmes’ use of fingerprints in Doyle’s work and use our own fingerprints patterns as a springboard to create unique and personal designs.
12th August
This workshop is based on a collection of small coffins found on Arthur’s Seat in 1836 which are now on display at the National Museum Scotland. Listen to a story from a local author inspired by this work and learn a variety of techniques, ranging from origami folding, printing on paper and fabric, stencilling and other mark making. They will create origami boxes and ‘primitive’ fabric dolls, both, for them to keep and for inclusion in the final Edinburgh 900/ Edinburgh Remakery Pop-up Book.
13th August
This workshop is based on one of Scott’s ‘Waverley’ novels, originally published in 1818, with a restored and revised version from 2004 by David Hewitt and Alison Lumsden of Aberdeen University. Participants of this workshop will learn a variety of simple hand sewing techniques, using beautiful fabric scraps for a collection of hearts. These can be adorned with fabric birds, flowers, feathers, beads, buttons and other small decorative items. Each participant will create hearts for them to keep and for inclusion in the final Edinburgh 900/ Edinburgh Remakery Pop-up Book.
