When Edinburgh gained burgh status and became a trading hub, skilled craftsmen were needed to make goods for sale at home and abroad. In the 1500s, these crafts had been established into 15 Incorporated Trades, from surgeons and goldsmiths, to fleshers (butchers), baxters (bakers) and candlemakers. This is the story of how these craftsmen exercised their trading monopoly, influenced the governance of the town and provided for members and their families who had fallen on hard times.
Find out how the Incorporated Trades of Edinburgh, who kindly contributed this story, continues to this day, with charitable, educational and ceremonial activities.
