Come and see images from The Living Memory Association’s picture archive celebrating Edinburgh’s working lives alongside material from the City of Edinburgh Council looking at civic governance through the Edinburgh 900 theme ‘City of David’. It was under the authority of King David I that Edinburgh was granted its burgh status in 1124.

Since then the city has grown and developed under various municipal authorities. The City Corporation, Regional Council and City of Edinburgh Council have all added to the city’s governance, and council workers have been at the forefront of service delivery; whether in schools, parks, transport, leisure and recreation, cleaning and refuse disposal or heritage and culture.

The Living Memory Association will be based at the St James Quarter on Leith Street, next to the Mhor Bakery, from the 16th to 30th June. Our exhibition can be visited between 10.30am and 4.00pm.

The Living Memory Association

Founded in 1986, The Living Memory Association is Edinburgh’s only centre solely dedicated to reminiscence work.

At our Wee Museum of Memory, based at Ocean Terminal in Leith, displaying our collection of social history objects, along with our extensive digital archive of photographs, we bring people together. Reminiscence is a process of sharing, where we learn about other people’s lives. Some life experiences can be unique, others common to us all.

We also provide training in reminiscence skills and oral history recording, both in person and online, and have a large collection of reminiscence loans boxes. See our website for details.
