The historic Edinburgh Riding of the Marches is set to return on Sunday 14th September 2025, with thousands expected to gather in the capital for a day of pageantry, tradition, and community spirit. This iconic event, which dates back to the 16th century, brings hundreds of horses to the city centre.

The Edinburgh Riding of the Marches is a spectacular reenactment of an historical practice where the city’s boundaries were checked on horseback, to ensure the landed gentry were not building on the land that belonged to the common people.

This year, the event promises to be more grand and inclusive than ever, with participants including seasoned riders from the 29 Common Riding Towns of Scotland, mounted officers from Scotland’s Cavalry Regiment, the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, schools and community groups from Edinburgh, superb entertainment, pipe bands and a ‘People’s Procession’ of 900 citizens representing the diversity of the City’s population. Not to be missed!

The Edinburgh Riding of the Marches is one of Edinburgh’s largest public events, taking place right in the heart of the Scottish capital every September.

Taking its roots from the historical Common Ridings of Scotland, 280 horses traverse the ancient Royal Mile. This spectacular cavalcade is a re-enactment of the return of the Captain of the Trained Band (responsible for keeping order within the City) to Edinburgh with the tragic news of defeat at the Battle of Flodden, 1513.
