The Grassmarket Community Project (GCP) will launch their hand-built St Ayles Skiff on Saturday, April 26, as part of the Seafaring Spirit festival celebrating Newhaven’s coastal heritage and the Edinburgh 900 celebrations. Britain’s most decorated female Olympian, Dame Katherine Grainger, will officiate the launch.

The boat, built over 18 months by GCP members, volunteers, and partners, reflects a deep community effort and traditional Scottish craftsmanship. Its name—chosen through a public competition—will be revealed at the event.

The launch includes live music from GCP’s band, a custom sea shanty, and handmade Greyfriars Tartan bunting. The event runs from 10.00 am and features skiff races, crafts, storytelling, RNLI demos, and more.

The project has been supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, HSBC, Edinburgh Airport, and John Lewis & Partners.
