This small, permanent exhibition, visible from the promenade, tells the story of Portobello Toddler Hut, the oldest independent and completely self-funded playgroup in the UK. See photos of the children from its early days on the external wall of the building, read about his history, testimonials and memories from its alumni. Children in the playgroup will collect shells from Portobello beach for local artist Helen Miles to create a mosaic that will be mounted alongside the photographs.

Portobello Toddlers Hut

Portobello Toddlers Hut logo
Established in 1929 by Dame Harriet Findlay, Portobello Toddler Hut is the UK’s oldest community-run, self-funded playgroup. Located on Portobello Promenade in Edinburgh, Scotland, this pioneering playgroup provides a nurturing and fun environment for children aged 2.5 to 5 years. Our play-centred approach allows children to explore and develop at their own pace, with daily opportunities to play on the beach. The Toddler Hut remains a vital part of the community, offering a warm and supportive welcome to all families, thanks to its small, experienced staff team. Help us continue this legacy of enriching early childhood experiences
