The Colinton Tunnel is home to Scotland’s largest heritage mural. Located in a former Victorian Railway tunnel, the 140-metre mural celebrates the history of the local community in immersive and vibrant artwork.

Using a short poem by Robert Louis Stevenson as its “spine”, the mural reflects the history of the short and unique railway line that once ran through the tunnel as well as bringing to life local history, people, industry and transport.

Robert Louis Stevenson’s grandfather, the Reverend Lewis Balfour, was the local Church Minister for 30 years, and RLS was a frequent visitor to the area as a child and a young man.

Created by muralist Chris Rutterford, skilled street artists, local amateur artists and more than 600 young people, the mural is accessible, free of charge, 24/7.

The Colinton Tunnel is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), regulated by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator. Our registration is SC048476 and we were registered in June 2018. Our Trustees are drawn from all walks of life and we are able to draw on their wide range of valuable life, work and public service experience. We set out to create a major art project that would both celebrate our community’s cultural heritage and revitalise the local economy.

The charity was established specifically to create and maintain a major mural in the disused Colinton Tunnel, formerly part of the Balerno Branch railway line. When the concept was first suggested, it quickly became clear that no existing local organisation had the capacity to create, manage, and fundraise for such a major project, so a group of like-minded individuals pursued it. We made a point, from the outset, of consulting as widely as possible with all stakeholders, of involving as many members of our community as possible (particularly young people) and of working collaboratively with all other local organisations. Those principles continue to be our priorities as we move from creating Scotland’s largest heritage mural to the longer term processes of care, maintenance and continuing development.
