The Kirkyard is an outdoor space with quite uneven paths and some steps. There is no public toilet in the Kirkyard but there are some in the National Museum across the road.

Greyfriars Kirkyard stands as witness to many of the momentous developments & events that have shaped Edinburgh over the centuries.  Here we can still find much evidence of the pre reformation period, the defence of the city, the reformation itself, the growth of the city, periods of prosperity, periods of plague, periods of social upheaval and warfare. Through looking at the kirkyard, the memorials in it and the people buried here we can still feel those events and the impact they had on life & death in Edinburgh.

Tours will take place on Sunday 4 May, Sunday 6 July and Sunday 7 September. Pre-booking is essential as spaces are strictly limited.

Meeting point: just inside the Candlemaker Row entrance to the Kirkyard, on the left.

The Friends of Greyfriars Kirkyard is a group of people who feel passionate about the Kirkyard and wish to learn about, share knowledge about & protect the place.

There is so much to learn about the Kirkyard on so many different levels. It is full of history, meaning and mystery, all of which we are keen to find out more about. We want to share what we learn so that more people can better appreciate the value and vulnerability of this special place. We want to help protect the Kirkyard by working with the people and authorities who are responsible for maintaining and caring for this place. Ultimately we want to help ensure that Greyfriars Kirkyard is preserved for future generations to learn from and enjoy.
