Adventure awaits at Dalkeith Country Park

Just a short drive from Edinburgh lies a gem of a day trip for families – Dalkeith Country Park.

With its mix of sprawling woodland, engaging activities and delicious food stops, the historic estate of Dalkeith Country Park is the perfect stop for a family day out – or a longer escape.

Woodland walks

As you arrive at the park, the peaceful setting immediately offers a welcome break from city life. Towering trees, open meadows and the gentle sounds of the River Esk set the scene for a day of discovery.

Begin with a gentle walk along one of the park’s many trails – some of which are suitable for bikes and buggies, where kids can hunt for fairy doors, spot deer, birds and squirrels, and breath in the fresh country air.

Fun at Fort Douglas

No stop to Dalkeith Country Park is complete without a visit to Fort Douglas, the park’s imaginative adventure playground.

Designed with both little ones and older kids in mind, it features turreted tree houses, zip wires, rope bridges, climbing walls and giant slides. There’s even a dedicated toddler area, ensuring safe play for the smallest explorers.

Parents, grandparents or carers can relax on nearby benches with a coffee while keeping an eye on the action or join in the fun themselves – there’s no age limit on excitement!

Thrilling adventures

For thrill seekers looking to take adventure to new heights, don’t miss Go Ape. The park is one of only three Go Ape locations in Scotland and boasts eight incredible ziplines spanning across the River Esk. With varying courses available for different ages, fly, climb and balance your way across the treetop course.

Or if you’ve ever fancied giving archery or dodgeball a try, why not combine them in one activity. Archery Tag is perfect for adults and kids alike, requiring teamwork, strategy and quick reflexes. Using bows and foam-tipped arrows, can you eliminate your opponents from the game?!

Refuel at Restoration Yard

Tummies rumbling? Head over to Restoration Yard, a beautifully restored stableyard that houses a family-friendly café, boutique shop and wellbeing studio. The café serves up a variety of options – from hearty soups and sandwiches to kids’ meals and sweet treats. High chairs and children’s portions make it easy for families to dine comfortably.

After lunch, take a moment to browse the shop. It’s a treasure trove of gifts, books, homeware and toys – perfect for picking up a memento of your visit.

Explore, discover and unwind

Dalkeith Palace

With energy restored, it’s time to explore more of the park. Families can follow trails past old bridges, through shaded glens and spot some of the estate’s historic architecture. Look out for Dalkeith Palace – a grand 18th century building with a fascinating past.

The park offers a year-round programme of events, from outdoor cinema to seasonal events for all the family. Be sure to check out the park’s calendar of events before you visit.

Extend the adventure

For those looking to turn their day trip into a longer stay, the summer campsite is a fantastic option.

There are spacious pitches for tents and pre-pitched bell tents, the latter of which come complete with air beds. A toilet and shower block provides washing up facilities.

Fort Douglas and the woodland trails are just a short stroll away, plus campers enjoy discounted entry into the adventure playground and an exclusive breakfast offer in The Kitchen at Restoration Yard (T&Cs apply). All in all, it’s ideal for families wanting to wake up in nature and enjoy more time in the great outdoors.

Dalkeith Country Park is more than just a park, it’s a full day escape that blends nature, play and adventure in a way that keeps the whole family happy. It’s well worth a trip – or even a few nights under the stars.
