From mighty fortresses to botanical gardens, wooded forests to animal-themed trails, prepare to be dazzled and enthralled by the enchanting illuminated trails adding a touch of sparkle to Edinburgh and the Lothians this winter.
Tip 1: As all these events take place outdoors, sturdy footwear and warm, waterproof clothing is recommended.

Edinburgh Zoo’s Giant Lanterns
For the first time in 6 years, Edinburgh Zoo’s popular family-friendly trail makes a much-anticipated return this winter – this time with an underwater twist.
Journey under the sea on a dazzling interactive ocean-deep adventure. Prepare to be wowed as you come face to face with a giant crab, take a walk through an enormous whale and explore a luminous under water wonderland. Plus, they’ll be refreshments such as toasted marshmallows, mulled wine and other festive treats available to enjoy along the route. Please note, the animals living at the zoo will be asleep and not visible during trail hours.
Quiet nights take place on 17 December 2025 and 06 February 2026. These will have reduced capacity, low music levels and the mobility vehicle available.
Edinburgh Zoo’s Giant Lanterns runs on select nights from 14 November 2025 to 22 February 2026.
Christmas at the Botanics
Follow an after-dark trail through the world-renowned Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh for an awe-inspiring interactive light trail.
Discover trees drenched in jewel-like colours, larger-than-life illuminations, dancing waterside reflections, sparkling tunnels of light and magical festive sounds at Christmas at the Botanics. New for 2025, this year’s trail will include new installations from international artists, all of which are designed to complement the garden’s natural landscape.
Quieter access session takes place on 30 November and 03 and 10 December. Beginning at twilight before the illuminated trail opens to the public, this will have limited numbers to provide a relaxed atmosphere.
Christmas at the Botanics is open on selected evenings between 20 November and 30 December 2025.
Castle of Light
See Edinburgh Castle come to light with the stunning Castle of Light. Let extraordinary installations, interactive moments and atmospheric storytelling guide you through the castle grounds for this all-new show inspired by the elemental forces of fire and ice. Journey through a fortress of light and encounter mythical creatures, from a mighty dragon soaring across the night sky to the Ice Queen herself in the Great Hall.
For those visitors that prefer a calmer experience, a reduced capacity quiet night will take place on 07 December. This will have softer lighting, lower sound levels and no smoke effects.
Castle of Light runs on select dates from 21 November 2025 to 04 January 2026.
Five Sisters Zoo Illuminations
Located at West Calder in West Lothian, Five Sisters Zoo Illuminations will shimmer and sparkle once more with its popular after-hours light display.
As well as light projections, visitors will be able to enjoy a festive market with crafts and gifts, food and drink stalls selling hot and cold food, drinks, crepes, doughnuts and sweets, and – weather permitting – children’s rides.
The route is mainly flat and is wheelchair, mobility scooter and buggy friendly. Quiet, autism‑friendly evenings are held on selected dates, with reduced music volume and visitor numbers.
Five Sisters Zoo Illuminations takes place on specific dates from 21 November to 23 December 2025.
Sundown Adventures
For something fun-filled, action-packed and adventurous, pay a visit to Sundown Adventures at Dalkeith Country Park.
The ultimate adventure with epic forest views under the night sky, experience a Go Ape adventure after dark and tackle tree-top crossings and epic ziplines, under glowing lights. Sundown Adventures is suitable for ages 6 years+ and a minimum of 1.2 metres tall. Adults must supervise children aged between 6 and 15 years old.
Sundown Adventures is available from 28 November to 30 December 2025.
