Set to be the Zoo’s biggest lantern trail yet, this year’s Giant Lanterns will transform the zoo into a glowing universe filled with spectacular illuminated displays, towering cosmic creatures and dazzling interstellar scenes.

Visitors can wander through glowing galaxies and immerse themselves in a luminous adventure brought to life by more than 1000 handcrafted lanterns and 15,000 LED lights.

Each lantern is carefully crafted and painted by hand, resulting in a dazzling collection of illuminated wildlife, cosmic creatures and larger than life displays. Plus, new for this year, visitors will also be able to glide through the galaxy with walk-through planets spanning 12 metres and stand amongst animal giants such as an owl with a 7 metre wingspan.

The route within the zoo is approximately one mile long. It is recommend to allow at least one hour to enjoy the event. Please note that the animals living at the zoo will not be visible during trail hours.

For visitors that appreciate a peaceful environment with reduced capacity, low music levels and the mobility vehicle available, Quiet Nights take place on 10 December 2026 and 11 February 2027.

There will be catering available throughout the event with freshly made toasties, Detroit-style pizzas and freshly baked favourites alongside a selection of seasonal hot and cold drinks.

As part of Lanterns Grotto, Santa will also be at the zoo on select evenings of the lanterns trail in December. And a visit to the zoo, evening meal and entry into Edinburgh Zoo’s Giant Lanterns at a reduced rate, is available as part of the Giant Lanterns Day and Light ticket.

The route is suitable for wheelchairs and buggies. Please be aware Edinburgh Zoo is situated on a hill, with the event route covering the lower half to be as accessible as possible. There will be some wheelchairs and pushchairs available for hire on arrival on a first come, first served basis.

There will not be a mobility vehicle in operation at the event due to visitor numbers and because the route encompasses some smaller pathways not accessible by vehicles.

A variety of ticket options are available. Find out more and secure yours now on Edinburgh Zoo’s Giant Lanterns.
