Blending history, literature, and personal interaction, Meet the Poet: Robert Fergusson honours his legacy in the city that he loved.

Robert Fergusson (1750-1774) was known for his significant contributions to Scots-language poetry in the 18th century. His poetry is celebrated for its vivid portrayal of Edinburgh life, with its bustling streets, taverns, and colourful characters, often combining humour, social commentary and a keen sense of observation. One of his most famous works is Auld Reekie, a lively and affectionate depiction of Edinburgh.

Running on 20 and 27 September 2024, the event starts with a one-hour tour of The Real Mary King’s Close, led by one of Edinburgh’s past residents.

Afterwards, enjoy a 30 minute session with a character guide Robert Fergusson. The poet will recount the fascinating tale of his life, struggles, and inspirations, reciting some of his most beloved poems to vividly bring 18th century Edinburgh to life.

Inspired by Fergusson’s poetry and the historic surroundings, you’ll have the opportunity to create your own verses in a poetry session. There’s also the chance to elevate your experience by upgrading your ticket to include a dram of The Real Mary King’s Close’s blended whisky.

This event is in collaboration with the University of Glasgow’s research project The Collected Works of Robert Fergusson: Reconstructing Textual and Cultural Legacies. This project is dedicated to ensuring Fergusson’s literary, textual, biographical, linguistic, medical and cultural contributions receive the recognition they deserve.
