Greyfriars Kirk and the Edinburgh Interfaith Association continue their partnership by expanding the ceremony to include representatives from all faiths and none, as well as fundraising for Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home.

This service follows the ancient tradition where farmers and others would give thanks for their beasts of burden following the autumn harvest. In modern times, this service has been extended to include pets from dogs to cats to rabbits, and even horses.

The service will be followed by an animal parade through Greyfriars Kirkyard and will conclude with a laying of a wreath at the grave of Greyfriars Bobby.

A collection, and donations of pet food, will be accepted during the service and all proceeds will benefit the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home who have been supporting pets and their owners for over 140 years in the Edinburgh region.

The Pet Blessing Service takes place in Greyfriars Kirk at 3pm on Sunday 05 October 2025.
