Taking place of the last Wednesday of the month, these talks each focus on a different area of science and the humanity of medicine. Upcoming events include:
- Spotlight: Straitjacket, 30 September 2026: Supported as a mark of medical progress in 1700s Europe, hated by patients and criticised by Victorian reformers – the straitjacket has a controversial history. Free entry, but booking required.
- Spotlight: Jacobite Chest, 28 October 2026. Hear about the Jacobite medicine chest. This chest, which contains 147 different medicines, was said to have been used at the Battle of Culloden. Its owner was a prominent Jacobite doctor and Physician-in-Chief to Bonnie Prince Charlie. This 20 minute talk is free, but booking is required.
- Spotlight: Victorian Exercise, 25 November 2026. Learn more about Victorian exercise. Across Europe bodybuilders and showmen like Eugen Sandow toured music halls, demonstrating their great feats of strength. At the same time Victorians were taking up gymnastics and huge open air public gymnasiums were established in many cities, including Edinburgh. Free entry, but booking required.
