Taking place of the last Wednesday of the month, these talks each focus on a different area of science and the humanity of medicine. Upcoming events include:
- Spotlight: Antimony, 29 July 2026: Discover about the medicinal use of antimony. Poisonous, vomit-inducing, illegal and in high demand, antimony was the go-to medicine for fashionable types. Free entry, but booking required.
- Spotlight: Straitjacket, 30 September 2026: Supported as a mark of medical progress in 1700s Europe, hated by patients and criticised by Victorian reformers – the straitjacket has a controversial history. Free entry, but booking required.
- Spotlight: Jacobite Chest, 28 October 2026. Hear about the Jacobite medicine chest. This chest, which contains 147 different medicines, was said to have been used at the Battle of Culloden. Its owner was a prominent Jacobite doctor and Physician-in-Chief to Bonnie Prince Charlie. This 20 minute talk is free, but booking is required.
