In partnership with the National Trust for Scotland, and a two year research and conservation programme, this new exhibition brings together an extraordinary collection of embroidered textiles, many of which have never been on public display.
Stitched: Scotland’s Embroidered Art will explore 200 years of domestic interiors, examining the art and design of embroidery from the National Trust for Scotland’s collection of textiles.
The exhibition will include more than 80 richly embroidered textiles from 1720 to 1920, including armchairs, large bed hangings, fire screens, tablecloths, cushions and tea cosies. Sourced from 18 National Trust for Scotland historic properties, these works will be shown alongside portraiture and drawings to illustrate the stories of the textiles.
Organised thematically, the breadth of artists and works included in this 200 year period will chart changing styles in textiles. Visitors will be able to explore how varied the medium was and the range of items that were embroidered, from decorative pieces to domestic furnishings.
The exhibition will also illustrate the striking trends and cross-cultural exchange of design ideas that appeared across Scottish interiors. Originally sought after for their beauty and perceived exoticism, these textiles also became symbols of status.
In conjunction with the exhibition, there will also be a range of special events.
