This ground-breaking exhibition will, for the first time, place the Scottish Colourists in the context of their European and UK contemporaries, examining how this international generation of radical painters made a significant impact on art produced at the time.
The Scottish Colourists – SJ Peploe (1871-1935), JD Fergusson (1874-1961), GL Hunter (1877-1931) and FCB Cadell (1883-1937) – are widely recognised as Scotland’s most talented and experimental artists of the early 20th century. Often exhibited as a quartet, in isolation from their contemporaries, their work will now be shown alongside painters such as Matisse and Derain, who sparked the colour revolution.

The exhibition will also investigate a possible Celtic connection through the works of Welsh artists, Augustus John and John Dickson Innes, and Ireland’s Roderic O’Connor.
The impact of Cubism and Vorticism on the artists will also be explored, before celebrating the coming together of the Scottish Colourists as a distinct group in the 1920s and 1930s.
Alongside the exhibition, a range of workshops covering everything from printmaking to embroidery are available. Find out more on Dovecot Studio’s What’s On page.
The Scottish Colourists: Radical Perspectives runs from 07 February to 28 June 2025. Tickets should be pre-booked online.
