Art and Activism in the UK 1970–1990
This comprehensive exhibition showcases feminist art that celebrates the women whose radical ideas reshaped British culture. Delve into the powerful and provocative works of over 100 women artists and groups, created amidst significant social and economic shifts over two decades.
Following its debut at Tate Britain in November 2023, the exhibition will bring to Edinburgh a select range of works, in what will be the only chance to see this landmark exhibition in Scotland. Paintings, drawings, sculptures, textiles, films and photography will be shown alongside a range of archival materials, with many artworks on display for the first time since the 1970s.
Through six thematic galleries, the exhibition will delve into topics like the Women’s Liberation Movement, Punk music, Greenham Common and the peace movement, showcasing how women used creativity to challenge and fight injustice, both individually and collectively.
A series of events, including talks and workshops will run in conjunction with the exhibition. National Galleries of Scotland: Modern (Modern Two) is located 15 minutes’ walk from Princes Street. If travelling by bus, Edinburgh Coach Lines service 13 run regularly to the area.
