Frankenstein (2025)

Oscar-winning director, Guillermo del Toro has created a new adaptation of the gothic horror which started all gothic horror: Frankenstein. The Netflix movie will retell Mary Shelley’s timeless tale of a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a monstrous creature to life in a daring experiment. Starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth, it’s sure to be a smash hit.

In keeping with the gothic theme, Frankenstein was filmed in various moody and dramatic areas in Scotland – including Edinburgh – where you’ll definitely feel a chill run up your spine on rainy nights.

An old and iconic city, Edinburgh already has a dark yet cosy feel, especially in the colder months. The dark stone buildings and cobblestone streets are the perfect backdrop for a deep story about monster vs. humanity.

Filming for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein took place on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile in September 2024, transforming parts of the area like Parliament Square and St Giles Street into a period setting. Stop by the Royal Mile and discover the plethora of things to do – activities, food and drink, accommodation, and shopping.

Extras for Frankenstein could also be seen taking over the Canongate area. For those lucky enough to see, they were dressed in 18th century clothes and top hats, as carriages lined the street which was covered in mud to mask the modern concrete. In addition to the Royal Mile and Canongate, other Scottish locations were used for filming, including Glasgow Cathedral and various sites in Aberdeenshire and East Lothian.
