Seasonal highlights

The summer festivals have drawn to a close, the kids have gone back to school and we’re fast approaching the end of summer. Don’t despair though, autumn is a wonderful time to walk around the city and see the sights, as the foliage in the city’s green spaces, tree-lined streets and 112 parks turns a glorious golden brown, adding another splash of colour both above and underfoot. For a picture-perfect walk crunching through the leaves we recommend the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh or the grounds of Lauriston Castle, both of which are free to visit.

This popular festival offers the chance to see inside many of the city’s fascinating buildings for free – many of which are not normally to the public – while the Edinburgh Riding of the Marches is a retelling of a tradition which dates back to the 16th century that’s fascinating to watch.

The International Storytelling Festival is celebration of storytelling – both traditional and contemporary. If you like your drink shaken and stirred, head along to Edinburgh Cocktail Week for cocktails, delicious street food and a jam-packed programme of live music and entertainment.

Autumn also means Halloween, and as one of the most haunted cities in Europe, Edinburgh does not disappoint, with a range of spooky events taking place across the city. Head to our blog page for more details.
