Just in time for Halloween, The Real Mary King’s Close invite you to descend down their historic steps with one of The Close’s former residents and into darkness. The only light source will be the flicker of your lantern.
As 17th century Edinburgh was still surrounded by the Flodden Wall, the city was limited from expanding outwards. As a result, it grew vertically instead, with tenement buildings reaching heights of 10 to 12 storeys. The narrow, densely packed streets made it difficult for natural light to reach the lower levels of the closes.
Discover the lives and deaths of real people who once walked Edinburgh’s streets. Along the way, you’ll also encounter two notorious figures from the 1600’s, whose mere presence struck fear into the hearts of all who saw them…
After wandering the shadowy closes with only a lantern to light the way, why not end the evening with something truly indulgent? From 11 to 31 October, guests joining the 6.15pm, 6.30pm or 6.45pm Lantern Led Tours can round off their night with A Spirited Evening – a special Halloween dinner at Amber Restaurant.
This hauntingly good tasting menu comprises seven dishes served across three courses and has been crafted just for the occasion, showcasing bold Scottish flavours. Dessert is paired with a perfectly chosen dram of Scotch whisky to warm the soul.
Tours run daily from 11 to 31 October 2025 (from 6pm to 9pm) For further details and to book tickets go to Lantern Led Tours.
