Underground Unlocked is an exclusive, free-roam experience that brings the hidden streets of Edinburgh back to life—but only for a few fleeting hours.

Visitors are invited to wander freely (for up to 2 hours) in the preserved streets and homes frozen in time, untouched for centuries. Up to 13 former residents of The Close await you, ready to share their stories. Maybe you’ll bump into John Paulitious, the ominous plague doctor as he goes to treat another patient. Or perhaps you’ll stop for a chat with the esteemed poet, Robert Fergusson – each turn of The Close reveals a new chapter of Edinburgh’s past.

This is your chance to see The Close as it might have been—alive with voices, characters, and hidden tales waiting to be discovered.

Please note, due to the historic nature of the site, The Real Mary King’s Close is not wheelchair accessible.
